What four builders at the forefront of the explorer yacht segment reveal about the brief, the build, and the future of going further..
The explorer yacht segment shows no sign of slowing. As more owners trade the familiar rhythms of the Mediterranean for genuine autonomy and self-sufficiency, builders across the size spectrum are being asked to deliver more: more range, more redundancy, more comfort, and increasingly, more purpose. We spoke with four very different voices in the explorer world, to understand how the brief is evolving, where the hardest design tensions sit, and what the next generation of explorers will look like.
An Evolving Brief
Five years ago, the explorer brief was simpler: get an owner somewhere remote and bring them back safely. Today, the ambition has broadened considerably. “The fundamentals of the Xplorer yacht brief have not changed dramatically,” explains Flavell. “Owners are still looking for safety, reliability, autonomy and genuine capability, all with the goal of enabling adventure and extraordinary experiences.” What has shifted, she notes, is less the yacht itself and more how owners want to use it. “It is no longer only about cold, remote destinations. It can equally mean tropical cruising, extended time away from conventional infrastructure, or simply having the confidence to be independent and self-sufficient.”For Mikhailov, the change is more fundamental: owners themselves have become more educated. “People finally start to learn that you cannot achieve great speed on this boat, but with the speed where the displacement boat is most efficient, they can reach four, five, six thousand miles of range,” he explains. Today’s buyers, he says, scrutinise details that would once have gone unnoticed, fuel tank ventilation, engine room placement, the difference between a true full-displacement explorer and a fast displacement hull dressed in expeditionstyling. “They’re much more educated now than the audience five years ago.”
At Archipelago, still a young yard by comparison, Dr. Weatherley sees the brief growing in complexity rather than changing in kind. “What we’re seeing is a growing demand for greater complexity and convenience onboard. Owners want more interconnected systems, more technology, and a higher level of comfort than ever before.” Yet the core attributes remain non-negotiable: “Reliability, efficiency, long range and the ability to operate independently.” The challenge, he says, is balancing those rising expectations “with the simplicity required for genuine exploration.”Verstraete frames the shift in more personal terms. Explorer owners, he suggests, are a different breed of client altogether. “Those owners do not want to impress, but express. They have a purpose other than showing up at the Monaco Grand Prix, inviting guests and having a party.” That purpose, he adds, is often deeply personal, citing his own six-year world tour with his family as a formative example of education and immersion that now shapes how he designs for clients chasing similar journeys.
Where The Tensions Lie
Ask any builder where the real friction sits in an explorer build, and the answer tends to circle the same handful of competing priorities: range, comfort, stability, speed and volume rarely pull in the same direction.For Damen, the resolution lies in treating these as complementary rather than competing from the very start. “Rather than treating capability and luxury as competing priorities, the range was developed to bring them together,” says Flavell. Flexibility is central to that philosophy, deck spaces that can flex between specialist equipment storage, helicopter operations or guest entertaining depending on the owner’s programme. “The key is to ensure that the volume is used intelligently and that capability enhances the experience rather than detracting from it.”
Archipelago points to a different tension: complexity versus simplicity. “Owners increasingly want sophisticated, interconnected systems onboard, from hybrid propulsion toentertainment and navigation systems that all communicate seamlessly. Yet a true explorer yacht benefits from remaining as simple and robust as possible,” Dr. Weatherley explains. Weight compounds the problem. “Owners naturally want to bring more equipment, more toys and more of the comforts of home with them. Our challenge is to provide those comforts while keeping weight under control.”Verstraete’s TS40 offers a vivid case study in resolving exactly this kind of tension. Briefed to deliver 20-knot cruising speed, ocean-crossing autonomy, seaworthiness and stability all at once, his studio worked through monohull and catamaran options with naval architects Lomocean before settling on a trimaran. “Result too many compromises,” he says of the earlier iterations, “then we landed on our trimaran model that gave the best result.
A very long exercise, lots of hours, calculations, simulations to come to this brief.” Mikhailov approaches the same trade-offs through naval architecture fundamentals rather than configuration. 
At Bering, comfort at sea is engineered through displacement ratios and metacentric height rather than added later through fit-out. “We build our smaller boats withthe same ratio of weight to volume as a superyacht,” he explains, describing a target ratio where gross tonnage and displacement tonnage converge near 1:1. The payoff is motion that feels disproportionately large for the vessel’s size: “Although the yacht is smaller, it will be more affected by waves to a certain extent. However, the motion of this small boat will be very similar to the motion of a much larger boat.” He’s equally precise about roll. “The metacentric height gives the best results when it’s 0.8 to 1 metre. So the boat rolls gracefully”, too high, he notes, and the motion turns stiff, as on a catamaran; too low, and the boat becomes sluggish to right itself.
Power, propulsion and the hybrid question
Hybrid propulsion came up with every builder we spoke to, though enthusiasm for it varies considerably.At Damen, the conversation starts at the very beginning of a project. “Propulsion and energysystems have to be considered from the very beginning of the design and engineering process,” says Flavell. “Autonomy is central to this type of yacht, so the technical platform must support extended periods away from conventional infrastructure while maintaining reliability and operational confidence.” She’s careful to frame the motivation beyond regulation alone: “Hybrid and alternative propulsion solutions are therefore not simply technical options. They are part of future-proofing the yacht for the way Owners want to cruise.”Archipelago takes a more sceptical line on the marketing around electric propulsion.
“There is a perception in parts of the market that electric propulsion is automatically more efficient,but the reality is often more nuanced,” Dr. Weatherley says. “Boats require significant amounts of energy, even at relatively modest speeds, and unless owners are prepared to accept very limited ranges, most long-range electric solutions still rely on diesel-powered range extenders.” For Archipelago, hybrid technology has changed the conversation with clients more than it has changed how the yachts are built: “It’s our responsibility to cut through the marketing noise, have honest discussions with clients and help them make informed decisions based on how they actually intend to use their yacht.”Mikhailov goes furthest into the engineering detail, drawing a sharp distinction between parallel and serial hybrid architectures.

A parallel system, with an electric motor mounted tothe main engine’s gearbox, typically offers only modest electric-only speeds and, in his view,questionable value for the cost involved. The serial system, by contrast, removes the main engine from the drivetrain entirely in favour of generator-fed electric motors. “You can go on batteries only and visit places where fossil fuel is prohibited and stay fuel-free for a very prolonged time with a good-sized battery,” he explains, adding that the quieter generators, running around 60 dB at one metre, with the boat itself reaching as low as 48 to 50 dB underway, deliver a comfort dividend that rivals far larger superyachts: “I’m 99.9% sure thatyou can easily reach the comfort class plus of the superyachts on very compact vessels.”Verstraete is candid about the limits of the alternatives currently on the table. “There are so many hybrid systems on the market, so much ideas, systems with sails, kites, electric parallel or serial, sun, batteries, pods, you name it,” he says, revealing he has run a kite propulsion system on his own motor vessel for three years. But for Deo Juvante’s builds, thepriority sits elsewhere: reliability that allows a yacht to complete its passage no matter what.“When one of our vessels is 1,000 nautical miles away from any land or help and the yacht faces a problem, the yacht has to be able to continue the route,” he explains. Repairs, too, need to be within reach of competent generalists rather than flown-in specialists. “We are very critical on those choices.
Ambition, on request
Every builder has a story about the request that pushed their engineering furthest. For Archipelago, it’s a tale of two very different scales. On one current project, an owner wants a large, heavy tender launched from extending davits concealed within the roof structure of anArchipelago 52, a puzzle of weight, structural load and mechanical packaging. At the other end of the yard’s range, the first Archipelago 80 carries a helideck engineered to accommodate an Airbus H145, rated to landing loads of up to 2.5G. “Integrating that level ofstructural capability into a sub-24-metre explorer platform is an enormous engineering challenge,” says Dr. Weatherley, “and probably the most ambitious request we’ve tackled so far.”At Damen, ambition tends to arrive through the deck rather than the hull. “We have seen a wide range of requests, from dual helicopter operations to highly adaptable deck areas that can function as storage, operational space and guest entertaining areas,” Flavell explains. “Ambitious requests are not the exception in this segment.”Verstraete keeps his answer characteristically brief: helipads, he says, are complex, though he’s quick to add that Deo Juvante holds firm on the brief regardless of what’s asked. “We can manage individual requests, but we stay firm on our brief and the vessel’s capability we believe in. No compromises on that one.”
Beyond the cruise: purpose and proof
Perhaps the most striking thread across all four conversations is how often “purpose” surfaced unprompted, not as a marketing line, but as something owners are actively seeking out.Mikhailov has lived this first-hand through Bering’s involvement with Yachts for Science, aninitiative matching scientists with grant funding but limited budgets to vessels that can host them. One expedition took a Bering yacht into the restricted waters of Silver Bank near the Dominican Republic, a permit-controlled whale nursery where only a handful of vessels are licensed each year. “We were in absolutely restricted territory surrounded by thousands of whales who are giving birth in this bank,” he recalls.
“We accommodated eight scientists. We spent six days there.” A planned underwater archaeology expedition near the Corinth Canal, tied to a submerged ancient port site, fell through this season for lack of a Greek government permit, but Mikhailov is already preparing to apply again. “It means that we can find the purpose,” he says. “Everybody can find their match, I believe.”For Damen, purpose-driven ownership splits roughly into two camps. “Some Owners come to explorer yachting with a very clear purpose-led ambition from the outset,” Flavell explains. “Others discover that sense of purpose through their time on board.” She points to families in particular, where the explorer experience becomes an educational one for younger generations, “a way to connect with nature, understand different environments and appreciate the importance of protecting them.”
Verstraete’s own six-year family voyage, schooling his children in a different country each year, Tahiti, New Zealand, Bali, Japan, Canada, Switzerland, sits at the root of how he now designs for clients with similar ambitions. One current TS40 owner, he says, wants to turn the vessel into “a worldly lab for human relations,” hosting workshops on workplace wellbeing for invited guests around the world, with an interior built sober and functional to suit. Crew, in this context, take on an elevated role too. “Crew have like another status than on a pure leisure yacht. They are part of the adventure, much closer to the owner, more valued,” he notes, pointing to the generous crew quarters built into the TS40’s layout.Archipelago strikes a more measured note on how widespread this is, at least so far. “Amongour customer base, the majority of owners are still focused primarily on leisure use,” Dr. Weatherley admits. But the direction of travel is unmistakable: “We are seeing increasing interest from charter operators, particularly in northern cruising regions, who want to offer more environmentally conscious experiences.” Many owners, he adds, become advocates after the fact: “They enjoy sharing their experiences and promoting the type of responsible exploration that Archipelago stands for.”
Regulation as a design input
With more sensitive and remote destinations under increasing environmental scrutiny, future-proofing has become a design discipline in its own right rather than an afterthought. At Damen, this starts at the earliest stages of a project. “Future-proofing therefore starts early, with careful consideration of propulsion, fuel options, onboard energy systems, emissions, efficiency and noise reduction,” says Flavell, framing the issue as one of access asmuch as compliance. “The most remote or protected destinations are no longer defined by distance alone, but also by the conditions under which they can be accessed.” Drawing on the wider Damen Group’s maritime expertise across sectors, she adds, helps the yard “think beyond today’s requirements and design with future use in mind.”
Archipelago takes a similarly pragmatic, client-led approach. “Future-proofing starts with understanding how and where an owner intends to cruise,” explains Dr. Weatherley. From there, the yard specifies hybrid propulsion, electric capability or emissions treatment systems as needed, though he’s candid that the cost implications are real. “These requirements inevitably increase cost and complexity. Our approach is to be transparent with owners about what’s coming.” Verstraete takes the most contrarian view of the four. Rather than engineering around tightening regulation, he suggests there’s still plenty of room to simply go elsewhere. “There are so many hidden pearls in the world, in and above the water, no need to go on the media-beaten paths with strict regulations and overcomplicated procedures.”
What comes next
Asked to look five years ahead, each builder’s answer reveals as much about their own positioning as it does about the segment.For Dr. Weatherley, the future is shaped by hull form as much as systems. “We’re seeing growing interest in catamarans because they offer excellent efficiency, stability and shallow draft, allowing owners to access remote anchorages and coastal areas that are often unavailable to larger monohulls.” He expects the trend to accelerate: “I expect we’ll see significantly more catamarans entering the explorer segment over the next five years, and we’re already seeing other manufacturers move in that direction.”Flavell sees the category becoming less about hardware altogether. “I see explorer yachting as more of a mindset than a fixed product category,” she reflects. “Exploration means different things to different Owners.” Looking ahead, she anticipates more facilities purpose-built around discovery itself, laboratories, specialist equipment storage, cabins for visiting experts, alongside a continued blurring of luxury and adventure. “The next generation of Owners and charter clients will increasingly look for both comfort and experience in one yacht.”For Verstraete, the breakthrough is speed. Deo Juvante’s TS40, cruising at 20 knots, is pitched as proof that performance and range aren’t mutually exclusive. “Speed means safety, reliability of weather forecast period, less risk, less boring time at sea and most of all it resets boundaries,” he says. “Imagine doing 500 nautical miles in 24 hours, that means you cross an ocean of 3,000 nautical miles in just six days. Once you are capable of doing that, time changes, possibilities change.”
Mikhailov, characteristically, returns to fundamentals: an explorer market that continues to grow precisely because it is the rare segment of yachting built around genuine function rather than image alone. The boats that will define its next chapter, in his view, will be the ones that keep earning the distinction between looking like an explorer and being one.
Taken together, these four perspectives, from a young, technically adventurous Archipelago,to Damen’s superyacht-scale Xplorer philosophy, to Bering’s naval-architecture rigour, to Deo Juvante’s speed-focused trimarans, sketch a segment that is anything but settled. What unites them is a shared conviction that the explorer yacht’s appeal lies not in any single hull shape, propulsion system or size bracket, but in the freedom it hands back to owners: the freedom to go further if they choose, to slow down and find purpose if they’re drawn to it, and to know, whether or not they ever leave the Mediterranean, that the option was always there.
