Mark Pascoe, founder of Falcon Tenders discusses what is the real meaning of the ‘ideal tender’ and looks at new technologies at the forefront of custom tender design
Good boat design is about a harmonious balance of functionality, aesthetics and engineering. Design is iterative and innovation drives progress, whether that’s integrating advanced electronics or rethinking traditional designs.
From my experience, several key principles underpin a successful tender design.
Firstly, it must excel at the specific purpose it was built for, be it performance, leisure or exploration, and every design decision, from hull shape to layout, should serve this purpose without compromise. Secondly, safety and reliability are of course paramount, and thirdly, it should handle the conditions it’s intended for with stability, efficiency and deliver confidence to the helmsman and passengers.
The ideal custom tender should also be intuitive to use and comfortable for its occupants, whether that’s the layout of the helm, seating arrangements or accessibility to key areas. While functionality takes precedence, a beautiful design that resonates emotionally is equally important especially with owners being so connected to the mothership. In my opinion, the ideal custom tender is not only functional but also a work of art.
Take for example, Project Y, Falcon Tenders’ newly unveiled custom limousine tender built exclusively for the iconic 141m motor yacht YAS. Continuity of design between mothership and tender is the mark of a truly cohesive vision and nowhere is this better exemplified than in this bespoke vessel, crafted with architectural precision and artistic intention.
Automotive inspiration is apparent in Project Y’s sculpted hull, streamlined contours and assertive stance. The silhouette is bold yet elegant, exuding a sense of motion even while at rest. Most striking are the large, seamless glass windows that wrap around the cabin, directly mirroring YAS’s own celebrated use of glazing. Inside, the interior replicates the mothership’s signature palette and material language, from custom wall panels that employ the same rich veneers, to the bespoke carpet woven to echo the design motifs aboard YAS. Engineered for both comfort and efficiency, Project Y ensures swift and stable transfer between the mothership and shore, regardless of sea conditions.
At Falcon Tenders, our designs range from sleek, high-speed open tenders to luxurious limousines, each one crafted with passion and precision. My background in championship powerboat racing has had a profound influence on the way I approach design and boatbuilding. Racing at that level teaches you lessons that are directly transferable to creating exceptional boats, such as hull efficiency, weight distribution and precise engineering. Whether I’m designing a high-performance vessel or a leisure craft, I bring the same focus on optimising performance.
Staying ahead often means embracing new technologies, materials and ideas. Features such as gyroscopic stabilisation and noise-dampening insulation speak to the high-performance expectations of yachting’s discerning clients. More tenders are integrating hydrofoil technology for improved efficiency, speed and comfort, while self-docking and AI-assisted navigation is used to enhance safety and ease of operation. Likewise, sustainability in yacht and tender construction is no longer a niche concept, but a necessity. As environmental regulations tighten and yacht owners demand eco-friendly solutions, such as electric or hybrid propulsion systems, boatbuilders must innovate to meet these expectations. At Falcon Tenders, we see sustainability as an opportunity to lead rather than follow, which is why all our tenders, including Miss Wonderly, our first hull launched in MYS 2021, are built with the option of hybrid propulsion.
Some tenders offer modular layouts that can be adjusted for different uses, such as guest transport, fishing or water sports. And there is a growing demand for rugged, high-speed RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats) and explorer tenders that can handle extreme conditions. That may include integrated dive support or submersible garages, as well as innovations in storage solutions that allow tenders to fit into increasingly compact yacht garages. Every tender that leaves the Falcon Tenders Southampton facility showcases the versatility and vision that defines our work. It’s about blending cutting-edge technology with bespoke, flexible and timeless design.
Ultimately, tailored tenders achieve a seamless marriage of form and function, creating a vessel that performs beautifully, feels intuitive and sparks joy every time it’s used.
